AI Visibility Check: Why One Good Run Tells You More Than a Hundred Quick Ones

Does ChatGPT recommend our company? And if not, who does it recommend instead? More and more industrial companies are asking these questions. An AI visibility check provides the answers. But not every measurement is equally meaningful, and more measurements do not automatically mean more insight.

What is an AI visibility check?

An AI visibility check examines what AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews say about a company and about its competitors. To do this, the models are asked the questions that buyers, engineers and decision-makers actually ask: which suppliers fit a specific application, how to solve a technical problem, how manufacturers compare.

Unlike classic search engine optimization, there are no rankings and no positions. What matters is whether a brand appears in the answer, how it is described and which sources the AI relies on.

What a measurement shows and what it does not

A measurement is a snapshot. It shows how the selected models answer at the time of measurement. A good analysis answers four questions:

  • Mentions: Is the brand mentioned, how often and where in the answer?
  • Topic areas: In which industries, applications and product areas is the company strong, and where is it missing?
  • Sources: Which websites, trade portals and third-party sites do the AI systems cite, and are the company's own pages among them?
  • Competition: Which suppliers are mentioned instead, including those that were not on any competitor list so far?

What a measurement does not show: it is not a traffic report and not a ranking report. Nor does it show what an individual user sees in their chat history, as AI answers are partly personalized. It shows the picture the models fundamentally have of a company and its market, and that is what counts.

Why dozens of runs add little

Many tools measure daily or weekly, always with the same questions. That looks thorough and produces impressive curves. But it hardly makes the analysis more meaningful.

The reason: AI answers fluctuate. The same question may be answered slightly differently today than tomorrow, without anything having changed in a company's visibility. Daily curves mainly capture this noise. As long as nothing changes on the website, in the content or in the sources, the patterns behind it remain stable. Dozens of repetitions merely confirm what the first measurement already showed.

What makes a measurement meaningful is breadth, not repetition: many different questions, clearly structured by topic and asked across several models. The models are defined at the start, and every model then receives exactly the same questions. This allows a clean comparison between models, and random outliers in individual answers even out across the large number of questions. What remains are reliable patterns, for example a topic area in which a brand is consistently missing across many questions and several models.

A new measurement makes sense when something has changed: after actions have been implemented or after a major model update.

How aiva measures

This is exactly the principle behind aiva, our consulting-backed AI visibility analysis for industrial companies:

  • Steered questions instead of chance: At its core runs aipa, our reproducible prompt infrastructure. It generates targeted questions per industry, persona, intent and use case. The questions are versioned and can be repeated identically at any time.
  • Fixed model versions: aiva does not just measure “ChatGPT”, but a precisely defined model version. This keeps every later measurement comparable.
  • All relevant models: the Western frontier models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot, as well as the Chinese LLM ecosystem with DeepSeek, Doubao, Ernie, Qwen, Hunyuan and Kimi. Learn more on our China expertise page.
  • Brand and non-brand separated: How well a brand performs on direct brand questions says little about whether it is recommended for generic solution questions. aiva evaluates both separately, because the big gap almost always lies in the generic questions.
  • Open methodology: Dimensions, personas and questions are provided as an Excel file, traceable and auditable.

How a reliable measurement is set up in detail is described in our article AI Visibility in B2B Is Not a Single Number.

From run to action: the AEO cycle

A measurement is only worth as much as the actions that follow from it. That is why aiva does not end with a dashboard, but with prioritized recommendations, an opportunity map by impact and effort, and a joint workshop. The recommendations cover three fields of action: technology, content and third-party sites.

On request, our AEO & GEO team takes care of the implementation, also together with your existing agencies. For content that AI systems understand and cite, we use tools such as aiga, our AI Glossary Agent for technical glossaries and buyer-intent FAQs.

After three and six months, we measure again with an identical configuration: the same questions, the same model versions. Only now is a further measurement truly meaningful, because it shows what the actions have achieved. Measure, act, measure again: that is the AEO cycle.

What this looks like in practice is shown in our case study The Hub No AI Could See: an industry hub that started without any citation trace and is now cited by AI systems.

Conclusion: steer visibility instead of watching curves

An AI visibility check is not an end in itself. Its value does not lie in the number of measurements, but in the quality of the questions, the breadth of the models and the actions that follow. A well-built measurement reveals the patterns. The re-measurement after implementation shows the impact. Everything in between is noise.
